Trick or Truth: MTL March Break Trip Myths, Busted

Spooky season is here, and so are the rumours. So let’s clear things up. MTL Break is a 4-day, 3-night March Break takeover of Montreal, and we bring hundreds of students from across the GTA along for the ride. We’re a private company (sorry, your principal isn’t invited), and your trip comes with round-trip coach transportation and your hotel. Our team is with you the whole time, at no less than one team member for every 30 travellers. Daytime is yours to explore the city with your crew, and our headline night event happens at a real Montreal venue. Now grab your candy corn. It’s time to sort the tricks from the truths.

Myth #1: “It’s a school trip.”

TRICK. MTL Break is a private company that operates independently from schools. It’s not a school or board sanctioned trip. That means you sign up directly with us, with your friends, no permission slip from your principal required. (Your parents are a different story. More on that below.)

Myth #2: “Nobody’s supervising.”

TRICK. The MTL Break team is present and available for the entire trip, and we aim for no less than a 1:30 ratio of team members to travellers. Every team member goes through a background check and a comprehensive training program before travelling, and parents have access to 24/7 assistance during the trip. Our events also include extra security.

Here’s the honest part: daytime hours are self-directed. You explore Montreal on your own with your friends, which is a big part of what makes the trip feel like your trip. Exploring a new city with your friends builds real confidence. Psychology Today explains why giving kids more independence helps them learn to solve problems on their own. However, it 100% adds peace of mind that our team is there if you need help with anything along the way.

Myth #3: “There are no rules.”

TRICK. Every traveller signs the MTL Break Code of Conduct before the trip. We have zero tolerance for underage alcohol consumption and zero tolerance for illicit substances. (The age of majority in Montreal is 18, and the age for cannabis is 21.) Our team can remove any traveller whose behaviour puts themselves or others at risk.

Myth #4: “It’s just one big party.”

TRICK. Yes, the night event is a highlight: real Montreal nightlife venues and professional performers. Past MTL Break artists include DJ Dolo In Da Cut, Smiley, Duvy and Killy. But most of the trip is about the city itself. Our hotels are in downtown Montreal, close to the best shopping and restaurants, and a free city shuttle runs from the hotel to key spots around Montreal. Want the full picture? Myth #5: “You need a passport.”

TRICK. You’re staying in Canada. All you need is a valid photo ID with your full name and picture, like a driver’s licence, health card or high school ID. We actually recommend leaving your passport at home unless it’s the only photo ID you have.

Myth #6: “Everything’s included, so I don’t need spending money.”

TRICK. Your trip includes round-trip coach transportation from the GTA and your hotel in downtown Montreal. Meals are not included, so plan for about $30 to $40 a day for food.

Myth #7: “I have to pay for it all at once.”

TRICK. You secure your spot with an initial deposit, then make monthly payments until the final balance date, with autopay available. You can also add Premium Insurance with Cancel for Any Reason coverage, but it has to be added within 72 hours of your initial deposit, so decide early.

Myth #8: “I’ll get stuck rooming with strangers.”

TRICK. You choose your roommates. If you’d rather be placed randomly, you can ask for that too. Just make sure your rooming is submitted by the deadline. Late rooming means an automatic single-occupancy room, which costs a lot more. Need help keeping the peace with your crew? Read how to survive the group trip dynamic.

Myth #9: “The bus ride is a pain.”

TRICK. Every charter bus has a Bus Captain, and pickup spots are usually central, like community centres, arenas or SuperCentre parking lots. If the weather makes it unsafe to travel, our team will find a safe place to stop. Honestly, the bus ride with your friends is SO MUCH FUN.  Pro tip: bring a neck pillow and catch some sleep on the way there. The Sleep Foundation’s travel sleep tips can help you show up ready to go.

Myth #10: “It’s not worth it.”

TRUTH? Not a chance. Ask anyone who went. See for yourself in our MTL Break 2026 recap, and read why your March Break belongs in Montreal.
